What is the
CBI Formula?
The CBI (Catcher Base Impact) formula quantifies how well a catcher prevents base advancements. It balances bases allowed versus bases saved, giving you a single number that measures your overall defensive impact.
CBI Formula:
CBI = (SBA + ABA + E_c + CI) - (CS + PO + BlkB + AP)
A lower (or negative) CBI means you’re preventing bases and dominating behind the plate. A higher CBI means there’s room to improve.
What Does the CBI Chart Track?
Bases Allowed (Hurts CBI, Higher is Worse)
-
❌ SBA (Stolen Base Attempts Against):
-
Runners trying to steal while you're catching.
-
-
❌ ABA (Allowed Base Advances):
-
Passed balls, wild pitches, and defensive misplays.
-
-
❌ E_c (Errors by Catcher):
-
Throwing errors, dropped balls, and mistakes that let runners advance.
-
-
❌ CI (Catcher’s Interference):
-
Giving batters a free base due to interference.
-
Bases Saved (Helps CBI, Higher is Better)
-
✅ CS (Caught Stealing):
-
Runners thrown out on steal attempts.
-
-
✅ PO (Pickoffs):
-
Successful back picks and pickoff plays.
-
-
✅ BlkB (Blocking Bases):
-
Stopping wild pitches and passed balls from advancing runners.
-
-
✅ AP (Advanced Plays):
-
Smart, game-changing defensive plays.

I always thought I was solid defensively, but the CBI chart showed me where I was giving away bases. Now, I’ve lowered my CBI and become a true asset to my team!
